The Air Jordan 11 Low IE Returns in “Light Orewood Brown”

At the time of its release in ’96, the Air Jordan 11 was only the third sneaker in Michael Jordan’s signature line to be offered in both high and low-top forms. The first sneaker to hold that distinction was the original Air Jordan 1, which was then followed by the Air Jordan 2. In both cases, the low top versions of those silhouettes mirrored the higher-cut offerings – that was not true of the Air Jordan 11, however.
The original Air Jordan 11 Low, which is now referred to as the Air Jordan 11 Low IE, was a departure from the patent leather–clad high-top. Instead, this version opted for standard smooth-leather mudguards with breathable open-celled mesh vents. Jordan Brand did end up producing a more one-to-one, patent-leather version of the Air Jordan 11 Low in 2001, but the IE is the true OG.
There’s still some debate as to what the titular “IE” stands for. At one point, Nike’s Gentry Humphrey claimed that it was for “International Exclusive,” though there’s no indication that there was ever a release of the model that was limited to overseas customers. Others have theorized that it may stand for “Imprinted Elephant,” due to the pattern’s appearance on some original colorways.
Regardless, the Air Jordan 11 Low IE is a classic in the brand’s retro line, and it’s set to return this October in a brand-new colorway.
This upcoming version of the Air Jordan 11 Low IE boasts a neutral color palette consisting of “Light Orewood Brown,” “Neutral Grey,” and “White” tones. Majority of the upper is done in a textile material, which is overlaid with smooth leather panels with mesh ventilation ports. The upper is devoid of branding, aside from the subtle Jumpman logos embroidered on the tongues.
Foam midsoles are given a white paintjob and sit atop smoky, semi-translucent rubber outsole units. The model’s signature carbon-fiber shank plates add rigidity to the cushioning system.
